Anchor Takes a Break

You know how celebrities sometimes disappear for a while under the pretense of "exhaustion."
Well, Anchor's not exhausted. But it is time for a little break.
We're hitting pause for a few weeks for some rest and planning time.
See you again in the fall! So stay tuned...
In the meantime, here's some good summer reading:

Tuesday, July 21: Chuck Norris Lookalike Contest

OK, OK, it's not a Chuck Norris Lookalike Contest. But it is manly, and it is fun.
Tuesday, July 21, Anchor is having a Guys' Night.
Here's the Plan:

5:45 PM: Meet at Church and arrange carpools (or you can just meet us at Gianni’s or the RMU ISC—see below)

6:00 (ish): Have Dinner at Gianni’s Pizza and Wings in Coraopolis

7:30 PM: Mini Golf at RMU’s Island Sports Center on Neville Island.

Again, if you haven’t let me know if you’re coming, it’d be a help if you did. Mini golf is $6/person if we have less than 10 people. If we break the 10-people mark, it’s $4.

See you tonight!

If you need more info:

Gianni’s Pizza and Wings
1009 5th Ave
Coraopolis, PA 15108-1803
(412) 262-2299‎

Coming from the Church: Cross the Sewickley Bridge and make a left at the light onto University Blvd. Go straight. As you come into Coraopolis, stay to the right and get on 5th Ave. Gianni’s is between Grant and Mill St on 5th Ave.

Anchor COOKOUT: Weds., July 15 at 7 pm

Join Anchor for that Great American Tradition: GMRCCBCO (Grilled Meats, Refined Carbohydrates, and Cold Beverages Consumed Outside). Also known as a Cookout.
We're meeting at the Zimmerman home at 7 PM on Wednesday, July 15. Special appearance by Queen Latifah.

Again, please note that we're meeting at 7 PM--NOT 7:30.

Meat (including veggie burgers) will be provided. Please bring a side, salad, or dessert to share.

See you there! And please feel free to invite friends.

Must read: Mark Galli in Christianity Today

I was floored when I read Mark Galli's recent blog post. Galli is the Senior Managing Editor of Christianity Today, the flagship magazine of the evangelical world. And in a day when most Christians--from pulpit to pew, liberal to conservative--present the religion of Jesus as one mostly about what you do and your self-driven improvement, Galli tells the truth: The Gospel is about what God does, not what we do. And he tells the truth about the widespread myth among Christians that we believers have "something different" about is. Read what Galli says. Think about it. Agree? Disagree? Either way, you have to respond to the points he raises. The future of the church will be largely determined by how people respond to this issue.

Anchor Summer Bible Camp (Week 2): Jul 2

Join Anchor on Wednesday, July 1, at 7:30 pm for the second gathering of a five-week Bible study. We'll continue our look at how Jesus interacted with various people in the New Testament. Our hope is to have an open, engaging conversation as we examine how Jesus talked, listened, and responded to people very much like you and me.
We'll meet at the Zimmerman house. Contact me for directions.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Anchor Summer Bible Camp

Remember Summer Camp? Bad food, bugs, and the unrequited love of your secret summer camp crush?

Well, we're not doing that.

But, we are having a fun, low-key, time to hang out and read the Bible and discuss it's meaning for our lives.

Poet John Berryman called Jesus the most interesting man who ever lived. Why? Find out at Anchor's five-week Bible study looking at some stories of Jesus' life. We'll be going through the Gospels (the biographies of Jesus in the New Testament) and taking a look at how Jesus interacted with a wide range of people, examining why he was such a powerful and magnetic figure. Our hope is that it would relate to your real life.

Our first meeting will be at 7:30 pm on Weds, June 24, at the Zimmerman house. Contact me for directions. Light refreshments will be provided, but you'll want to eat dinner before you come.

Anchor's Lazy Summer

Anchor is taking a break from our normal schedule this summer to give us some space to do some different things.

We're currently planning an informal weekly Bible study, along with regular cookouts and outings. Stay tuned...

As we finalize plans, we'll post them here, as well as on our facebook group: "St. Stephen's/20s-30s."
